Greater Than

God promised Abraham that He would multiply his descendants as countless as the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore (Genesis 22:17). He is honored by Jews, Muslims, and Christians—the three Abrahamic world religions. As the patriarch of Israel, a prophet in Islam, and a model of faith in Christianity, he unites billions of people across history, just as God declared. In John 8:53 the Pharisees challenged Jesus, asking, ‘Are you greater than our father Abraham?’ The answer is clear: Yes, He is! James calls Abraham the friend of God, but Jesus is the Son of God and Lord of all creation. Abraham was the father of faith, but Jesus is the object of that faith. Abraham was chosen, but Jesus is the Chooser. God made a covenant with Abraham, but Jesus fulfilled this covenant. Abraham received promises, but Jesus is the promise fulfilled. Abraham was spared from drinking the bitter cup when asked to offer Isaac, but Jesus drank the bitter cup fully, offering Himself on the cross so that we could be forgiven. Most importantly, Jesus brings people from every tribe, tongue, and nation into God’s family, offering eternal life to all who believe in Him.

For Israel, the temple was the meeting place with God—the center of their worship and religious life. It was the only place where sacrifices could be offered and where acceptable worship could take place. But Jesus declares Himself greater than the temple. In the new covenant, God’s presence is no longer bound to a building - it is revealed to us in Jesus. He is the cornerstone of the new temple and we are the living stones being built into a spiritual house. The priests served in the temple temporarily and with weakness. Jesus, the sinless and perfect High Priest, serves forever and is continually interceding for us at God’s right hand. The temple required continual sacrifice. Jesus is the perfect sacrifice who once for all satisfied God’s wrath, so that we may have peace with Him. The Sabbath rituals in the Temple pointed to Jesus as the fulfillment: He is Lord of the Sabbath, the true rest, the bread of life.

In Matthew 12:41 Jesus says, that he is greater than Jonah. The contrasts between Jonah and Jesus are striking: While Jonah disobeyed and ran from God, Jesus obeyed and left His heavenly glory to come to earth and fulfill the Father’s mission. Jonah had no love for those he preached to; Jesus wept over Jerusalem because He loved His enemies, and He forgave them even as He hung on the cross. Jonah was preserved through a fish despite his rebellion; Jesus willingly laid down His life and died for our sins. Jonah survived the fish, but Jesus truly died - and rose again in victory. Only Jesus has conquered death. No other religious leader offers that kind of hope.

King Solomon surpassed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom (1 Kings 10:23), yet Jesus declares that He is greater than Solomon (Luke 11:31). And indeed, He surpasses him in every way. Solomon possessed riches, yet Jesus owns all things. Solomon was wise and smart, but Jesus is the greater teacher of wisdom. Solomon’s reign brought earthly peace, but Jesus offers peace with God. Solomon built a magnificent temple, but Jesus has built through his blood an even greater temple in his people, the church. Jesus is the Greater King with a greater kingdom - one without borders, spanning heaven and earth, everlasting and unshaken by death. And as the perfect husband, Jesus is greater than Solomon, loving His bride, the church, perfectly and eternally.
